The courses in this category cover the many radio-based technologies that provide wireless connectivity between everyday electronic devices. They include key technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth™ as well as the growing number of specialized and currently lesser-known technologies such as ZigBee. These courses will provide engineers with an overview of the technologies and their uses as well as supplying essential technical detail.

Wi-Fi is now incorporated into almost all new computer devices, especially laptops and PDAs. It is used commercially in the provision of Wi-Fi Internet access points and, increasingly, in the domestic environment as people build low-cost Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) in their homes, usually based around broadband Internet access. However, there are other common applications for Wi-Fi, for example its incorporation into devices such as cameras, mobile phones and even domestic appliances.

This category also addresses the methods of access used by subscribers to the network. Access networks need to carry traffic generated through a range of services with diverse quality of service requirements. In addition some access network may also need to support mobility in subscribers. Transmission media may include copper, fibre or radio and the access network will need to remain compatible with evolving core networks.
